A Nice Fall Training Run

We are not the only ones getting ready for winter!! Lots of farmers moving bales around...

...and cattle!!

We went 30 miles, then the dogs 'camped' in the yard for 2 hours before heading out for another 7 miles.

Dog of the Day - Hector

Chlout's Hector of NorthWapiti
DOB - August 28, 2001
Sire - Alaskan's Raven of Anadyr
Dam - Alaskan's Baleen of Anadyr
Breeder - Bob Chlupach and Rick Outwin
Nickname - Hec

One of 'The Hs' - littermate to Herman and Hilda.

Finisher of mulitiple Iditarods, Kniks, Taiga 300, Copper Basin,Don Bowers - and a bunch of stuff I'm probably forgetting about.

When Bob Chlupach called in the early summer of 2002 and said he had 3 littermates he thought I might like, I was on the phone immediately trying to make arrangements to get them down here from Alaska. Things lined up remarkably well and my dear friend, Jamie Nelson was able to bring them down to me a few weeks later. I'm am so glad that things worked out so well, for all of the 'Hs' are significant players in our team.

Hector is very much like his brother and alot of folks can't tell them apart. But he does have a shorter tail without a white tip and more white on his face then Herman. He is also a much better leader!

Hec is a hard working, cool dog. One of the cornerstones of my team. He is also well known for starting group howls on my command - a trick that he and I love to demonstrate in the starting chute of the Iditarod.

A very special boy!

Hector has long time, seriously enthusiastic sponsors in Ruth Lloyd, Susan Davies, Anna Conser, and Laura Neville Wood! Go JayHawks!!!

Dog of the Day - Grit

NorthWapiti's Grit
DOB - June 24, 2007
Dam - Chlout's Hilda of NorthWapiti
Sire - NorthWapiti's Detonator (Nate)

Nickname - Grituitous (no, again, no clue how that came to be)

Grit is 'grit' as in 'grits and gravy' - although he prefers to think of himself as 'grit' as in tough! He's a little man with a bit attitude, so I try not to burst his bubble too often!

Grit has a number of strange 'quirks' in the dog yard - like not liking his head being petted and not liking to be led places, but in harness just puts his head down and goes. Honestly, the quirks in the yard just make him interesting!

I Love Old Houses...

...I mean 'really' old houses ... and old barns ... and old sheds.

I wish we had an old homestead on our property. Apparently we used to have a couple. The biggest being next to an old shingle mill not far from our house, but a fire through the valley about 25 - 30 years ago destroyed all the remains - including the old heirloom pansies that bloomed near the house site. So sad!!

Since I don't have 'one of my own', I love looking at old homesteads that we pass on our runs. I imagine what they looked like in their 'heyday' and think about all the changes they have seen in their time. I especially love passing them near the holidays and thinking what the celebrations of those residents might have been like.
I know - hokey - but I spend alot of hours puttering around the neighborhood at speeds under 10 mph.

This old homestead is one of my favorites...

It is right at one of my early season turnaround spots, so I've looked at it alot and even roamed around in it a few times.

A month or so ago I noticed the landowners had cleared some more field around it and even take down the old barn.

Today I see they have cleared all the trees that used to surround the old farmhouse. I hope not, but I fear it's days are numbered.

I'll mourn it's passing - and the passing of all the history it will take with it.

Karen

PLEASE...

My 'totems' are up, my prayers are being said nightly......PLEASE

Dog of the Day - Fritter

NorthWapiti's Fritter
DOB - June 24, 2007
Dam - Chlout's Hilda of NorthWapiti
Sire - NorthWapiti's Detonator (Nate)
Nickname - Fritter the Critter

Littermate to Grit, Roscoe, Bubba, Billie, Addie (Daisy), and Tidgy (Banjo).

Fritter is a beautiful gal. In harness she is sweet and problem free - just does her job and minds her own business. Gotta love those dogs.

I don't know that she has the 'superstar' potential that will get her on the dog truck as a 2 year old, but I'm fairly certain that she will hit the road with the main string many times in the years to come!!
A nice solid sound hardworking gal!

A Tag Along

I haven't spoken much about our new handler, Richard, but that isn't because he isn't working out great - he is.
In addition to doing a great job on kennel chores, helping out around the house and even befriending Bet he has been scootering with the dogs alot. Yesterday he asked if he could join us on our training run with a bike and a dog. Both Mark and my eyebrows jumped at that one. "Sure, if you want to". The agreement was that if the chosen dog - Newt - got tired or Richard got too beaten up, they could turn around and head home at any time! They didn't - they did the whole 20 mile run with us (we have scaled back our run a bit while some of the dogs deal with sore feet)!!

It was fun to have him along, fabulous for Newt and great distraction training for our young dogs!!
