Dog of the Day - Flash

NorthWapiti's Flash Gordon
DOB - August 1, 2005
Sire - NorthWapiti's Super Grover
Dam - Ch.NorthWapiti's Valkyrie Kara
Nickname - Flashy Pants (no, I have no clue how that came to be)
and 'The Holstein' (because his markings look like a Holstein cow)

Out of the 'SuperHero' litter. Littermate to Wolverine (Wolvie), Captain Canuck, Wonder Woman, Xena, Electra, and Isis.

Flash is one handsome boy. Not the a superstar in harness, but a good, solid team dog. His oddest trait is that he is extremely noisy, which is odd because both his Mom and Dad are (were) very quiet. Flash never hesitates to scream to get his point across and loudly protests whenever we are doing anything in the yard that he finds even vaguely interesting.

Dog of the Day - Dew

NorthWapiti's Do The Dew
DOB - June 19, 2006
Sire - NorthWapiti's Butch Cassidy SD
Dam - Alaskan's Jumper of Anadyr
Nickname - Dewsie
Out of the 'Soda Pup II' litter. Littermate to Gator (as in Gatorade).

Dew is a race rookie!

A more appropriate name for Dew might have been 'Moonbeam' or 'Sunshine' as she is the 'Love Child' of Butch and Jumper. We thought both her parents were past their breeding time, but love prevailed!!
Dew is a silly and crazy gal. Super affectionate and fun loving!! I've looked a few times however to see if she has a sign that says "Kick Me" on her back, as she is one of those dogs that all the other dogs want to pick on - Cricket in particular! We are working hard on building Dew's confidence to help her past that!

Dew is also the favorite of my niece and future Jr. Iditarod musher, Corrine! Hopefully she will be ready to lead Corrine down the trail in a few years!

Dog of the Day - Dasher

Ch. NorthWapiti's Dasher
DOB - December 21, 2001
Sire - NorthWapiti's Butch Cassidy SD
Dam - Ch.NorthWapiti's Valkyrie Kara
Nickname - 'DasherDog' or 'D-Dog'

There isn't much this gal hasn't finished.

Dasher simply does not get the credit she deserves. I rave about up and coming leaders and past leaders - but the reality is that for the last 5 years or so Dasher has always been there. She does it all - storms, crowds, leader training, crack 'Gee/Haw' leader, sets a good pace, etc, etc. - and always with a smile on her face. She is a fun loving, happy go lucky gal.

She should be on a pedestal, but knowing Dasher, she blush and say 'AW SHUCKS' then bounce off to do something else.

So, although I may not carry on about her - make no mistake I owe her alot and she is a key, key dog here in the kennel!

Dasher has a loyal long term sponsor in the folks from the FABULOUS Save Our Siberians - Siberspace Rescue Fund (SOS-SRF)

Dog of the Day - Crunchie

Champion NorthWapiti's Crunchie
DOB - June 6, 2001
Sire - NorthWapiti's Super Grover
Dam - Northomes Visa
Nicknames - Crunch, THE Crunch

Part of the Chocolate Bar litter - littermate to Snickers (deceased), Skor and KitKat. Contrary to popular belief Crunch is not named after the Nestle Crunch bar but a Canadian chocolate bar that is sponge toffee cover in chocolate - a Crunchie.

Crunchie is a finisher of practically every race I've run since 2003. He is the Iron Horse of my team. As solid and sound as they come. He has never dropped from a race.

There is no doubt, everyone that has been to our kennel can see it - he is my favorite dog in our dog yard. I respect and appreciate him as a working animal and he speaks to my soul as a friend. I adore this dog!

Crunchie is, as always, sponsored by Dana and Judy Kevelder!

Dog of the Day - Charge

NorthWapiti's Charge
DOB - August 2, 2004
Sire - NorthWapiti's Sir Galahad (Surge)
Dam - Alaskan's Olena of Anadyr
part of the 'Electric Litter'. Charge is a littermate to Watt (deceased), Tess, Spike and Sparky.

Finisher of the Iditarod, Don Bowers 200, Taiga 300, Seeley Lake 200 and more.

This litter was planned and named by Mark, who just happens to be an electrician. When Charge was a pup he was much bigger and more boisterous then his littermates. We figured he was either going to be a star or a total flop as a sled dog. He is a star!

We refer to Charge as our 'perpetual motion machine' as he is always moving. The rest of the yard can be peacefully lounging around and Charge is pacing around his circle.
He is a handful of a dog to move around, harness, hook up and otherwise handle - but he is so worth it when he gets going on the trail. A true force of nature that boy is.
He embodies the power and strength of his father and the quirky sense of humor of his mom. Really a very fun dog!!

A rare shot of Charge at rest!!

Charge is very enthusiastically sponsored by Pat and Mel Bach of Albrightsville, PA.

It's November ...

...which also means it's hunting season. So it's time for a change to the 'uniforms'.

For me....

...the orange hat.

For the dogs...

...snazzy orange vests!!

We just like to be cautious - but if I were these guys...

I'd be downright panicked!

Dog of the Day - Casey

NorthWapiti's Casey
DOB - Oct 10, 2006
Sire - Ch.NorthWapiti's Q
Dam - NorthWapiti's Sprite
Out of our 'Mr Dressup' Litter - littermate to Finnegan (deceased)

The story in the purebred mushing world is that 'red dogs don't run'. Having Spud, Gilligan, Squeaky, and other great red dogs in our teams over the years has convinced me that that is nothing more then an urban myth. However I certainly don't have as many 'red dogs' in the yard as other colors - and I have never managed to get a 'red dog' to Nome (Squeaky got to White Mt, 77 miles from Nome, in '04). Right now Casey carries the 'red dog torch' - and she is doing a fine job of it. She drives hard and is one of those dogs you just forget you have in the team! I was just thinking the other day that she needs to have a try at lead - perhaps today will be her day! I am convinced it will be a successful debute - with 2 great leaders as parents, how could it not be?

Casey's litter was actually the result of a clandestine night time encounter after Q managed to slip his collar. DNA to verify him as a sire was required. The litter was born in October and spent the first 2 1/2 months of their lives living under foot in the house. Casey and Finnegan were very precocious and loved their house time - racing with their mom for the coveted positions on the dog beds whenever they were let out of the back room!! Very fond memories!

Casey is available for sponsorship!
