Moeraki Boulders

Well, first night home - it's midnight - I'm exhausted but sleep just doesn't seem to want to happen - so why not blog???

After race marshaling at the Wanake Sled Dog Festival, Ray Holliday took me on a wonderful tour of the southern end of the south island of New Zealand.

One of the coolest things we visited was the Moeraki Boulders. I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical at first of just how interesting 'rocks on a beach' could be, but heck, any excuse to walk on a beach works for me!!!!

And it was fun to watch these two gulls harass this black Oyster Catcher. Reminded me of the tough guys in high school bullying other kids for their lunch money.

I wonder if there are support groups for seabirds with low self esteem??

Anyway, the boulders were only a small walk away and honestly would have been worth a MUCH, MUCH longer journey to see.

Seriously....round rocks scattered all over the beach.

How cool is that??

Mark and I were debating tonight where they looked like basketballs or soccer balls...

My vote?? ....Star Wars Death Star...but remember I'm sleep deprived...

Whatever they look like, I'm very glad that we stopped to see them...

And for an explanation of 'why', check out this...

...or this....

....or this....

Much bigger but these look similar to the ones we have in the sandstone walls in central Montana. Found this info on Utah and I think it is also the same ... thought you might like to see it:
