Arctis Carts

Readers may remember last fall when my friend Henning Bartel came out to visit. Henning brought one of his Arctis Carts along and we had a great time playing!!

Henning's cart are very well made and able to hold nice sized dog teams!!! A really versatile piece of equipment for small and large kennels!!
Anyway, Henning is planning on another trip up to NorthWapiti and is therefore offering free shipping on his carts to anyone along his route north!!

You can find further information on his carts and this great offer at his Arctis Carts blog

Rain is refreshing????

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.  ~John Ruskin

Hogwash....while I agree that 'sunshine is delicious' and 'snow is exhilarating' - I'm having trouble with that 'rain is refreshing' thing.

Maybe this is why I think that (it was taken at the kennel yesterday) ...

or this....

or this...

Then I thought maybe I'm overreacting. So I asked Crunchie if he thought 'rain was refreshing'?

I'm fairly certain that is a 'NO'.

Maybe Irving and Runner have a better perspective on rain...

Guess not.

Tramplings?????

Gosh, where is the bouncing and yelling??? I guess they don't find it very refreshing either

Bet, Bet???

Meh...
What about Cricket??? She always has a pretty good outlook on things.....

...or not!!

But Cricks, you can you the ruts created by the runoff for a new sleeping spot!!

There is always a 'silver lining' I guess!!!

This and That

Just thought I'd share a few images from the last few days. Those of you on Facebook have probably seem most of them already, but I know that not everyone is on there!!

This is a field we run through almost daily in the winter, but instead of sporting a blanket of snow, it is sporting a blanket of daisies right now!! So pretty!

This is Melody, my friend Gabi's horse that she has been letting me ride this summer! I'm enjoying it so much!! Thanks Gabi!!

Gabi and Cello ahead of us on the Landing Trail (another of our winter dog trails!)

American Finches at our feeder on July 4th! How appropriate!

The most awesome guard dog on the planet!!! Okay, maybe not, but we love her anyway!!

Cosmos growing in THE Planter.

Forget what this flowering vine is, but it is doing great on the trellis in THE Planter.

More Cricket. I think she looks like she is smiling in this picture (actually, she was attempting to howl with the dog yard)

Bait says "Talk to the paw" when I mentioned he was sleeping in my spot on the couch.

Mission Accomplished

Many people have been asking me lately about how I have accomplished my weight loss. Honestly, there has been no secrets - just hunger, sweat and pain!!!
I watch what I eat and workout on a regular basis.
My one 'rule' is that I do something seriously active everyday. Dog chores don't cut it, it has to be biking, swimming, running or aerobics for at least an hour or more (usually more). I did let this slip during the winter when we were putting big days in with the dogs, but then I cut my food intake back even more.
I do love food (and I know you are all shocked - wine) far too much to deprive myself too seriously, but I watch my portions and when I do indulge I just kick up my workouts.
On my recent trip to California (a blog about that is coming soon!), I certainly ate and drank well. I got on the scale the other day and was delighted to see that I had actually lost a pound. So obviously I didn't indulge too badly - however, since I wasn't working out, I was feeling rather sluggish and felt the urge to give myself a good butt kicking workout.  A trip to the city was in order.

I've been discovering this spring/summer that Edmonton is a much more interesting city then I previously suspected (I'm generally not a huge fan of cities).

It is just loaded with wonderful bike trails along the river valley - and because it is in a river valley, there are some nice climbs on the trails. I've gotten to the point that I can get up all the climbs, except one - the switchbacks on the south side of the High Level Bridge have totally had my number all summer. Although I've been able to cut the length of my stops down considerably, I still have to take at least 2 breaks on the climb - but not today, I vowed!!

Of course, because I'm not always the sharpest knife in the drawer, I didn't go tackle the climb right off, I rode clear from one side of the city to the other - and at a much faster clip then I normally do. This trip the only other cyclists moving faster were the ultra serious, spandex clad ones.
On the way home I did a bit of exploring on some trails I hadn't been on before, then realized I was really just stalling and headed for the bridge. On the way over, I tried to convince myself that weather was moving in, reminded myself that I had a MUSH with PRIDE conference call I had to be home for, etc, etc - all good 'excuses' for taking a shorter, easier route home but when I hit the bridge with a "SUCK IT UP PRINCESS" I turned onto it.

As I started pedaling up the switchbacks, I reminded myself of a friend's advice to just use a low gear and 'let the bike do the work'. What a load of *&^*$# that was!!! I am certain my bike did none of the work!!!!
About a third of the way up I caught up with a shirtless, pony tailed man walking his bike up. As I passed by him, he said in a heavy French accent "You are doing much better then I". He was nice enough looking that I wanted to say something clever and charming, but my oxygen deprived brain just wouldn't cooperate. Oh well, even if it had, I'm certain if I quit wheezing long enough to speak, my left lung would have escaped via one of my nostrils.
I gave a charming smile my best effort, but I'm fairly certain it came out looking like a twisted grimace!

Then much sooner then I expected I hit the top of the climb. I debated doing a small dance of joy at my accomplishment, but it was likely a passing car would have called the cops on me or some such thing. I settled for a couple pics -

...the top of the hill

...and me

Honestly, I thought my face would look alot redder, it certainly felt that way!!

I took a couple deep breaths (actually, I was very pleased at how quickly the wheezing stopped and my heart quit trying to jump out of my chest) and pedaled off humming away to myself.

Mission accomplished!!!

Free Running the Tramplings

The Tramplings have gotten too fast for free walking, so since I've got home from California, we have been free running them with the ATV.

Do you think they are excited to get going? That is Neo getting some serious air time!

And they are off....

"Bring 'em back Bet"

Good run!! Good Girl Bet!!!

Oh Canada, and Other Things - Bet

Howdy ho everyone, its your Canadian Border Collie, Bet here!

I've been super duper busy since the Musher got back from her whirlwind U.S. speaking tour!  Much too busy to blog, so I apologize for the lack of curly tail tales.

When Air Canada fails, Greyhounds always deliver
First of all, the Musher was very nice to have packed my very special dog bakery treats from Three Dog Bakery in her carry on luggage, because that meant that they weren't lost in her checked luggage like all of her other stuff, like her camera.  We finally got the bag back via Greyhound, which goes to prove that if you want good, fast service, always trust the Greyhounds!

Except for a bit of drool, the bag was delivered safely and the Musher got all of her underwear back.

Then there was the unpacking and laundry, and the "welcome the Musher back" celebration by the curly tails, which takes the form of dancing, howling, and general curly tail happiness.

The Snowbirds flying to Florida
Then there was Canada Day!  The Canada day celebration around here was great, chock full of pancakes (I'm petitioning the Country to change it to waffles), a big Canada cake, some fireworks, wearing red, and other stuff.  Bigger cities have a flyover by the Snowbirds... no, not the old people that move to Florida every winter, its the official Canadian Forces demonstration team, but here at North Wapiti we had the official flyover of some birds that fly over all the time, but on Canada day they fly over... specially... or something like that.  Did I mention we had cake and pancakes?

Once all of that celebrating was done, the Musher hooked up the curly tails for a run!  Since it had been a while that I've been able to stretch my legs, I went along and got 4 miles in with the team... running beside them... I may do a lot around here, but I don't pull sleds or ATVs (who have perfectly functioning motors and don't need me to pull them).

When we got home, the Tramplings wanted a piece of the action, so I herded them for a mile run (blah blah look at the pretty flowers, blah blah blah what kind of flowers are they blah blah why is grass green) and by that time... HOO BOY my feety feets were pretty crampy!

Lucky for me, the Musher had installed a whirlpool spa!  All this time it was in the little room and I had no idea until the Musher was away and I did some exploring.  I can see why they always kept the door closed so I wouldn't find it, this thing is amazing and does a great job of relaxing my crampy toes.

After a couple of treatments, I'm ready to go again!

Canada Day 2011

Every year on Canada Day I try to share something 'Canadian' on the blog. I started off yesterday looking for just the right thing, but couldn't seem to find what I wanted. My internet connection has been giving me issues and kept kicking out, so the day eventually ran out on me, but rest assured, Canada Day did not pass by unnoticed.

I have been lucky enough to visit a whole lot of amazing places in my life. Many of these places have touched my heart and soul, a few I could imagine living in, but Canada will always be my home. It doesn't touch my heart and soul, it owns it. I consider myself completely blessed to have been born and raised Canadian.
So today, what I am sharing is some of my own photos from around my favorite country. It is far from a fair representation of Canada, most of the images were taken around here, a few in BC, the Yukon and Nova Scotia, but I hope it gives you a bit of a taste of the country I love!

(And yes, I know music by an amazing Canadian artist, of which there are many, would have been more appropriate, but I don't have much music on my computer in MP3 format, and since my attention span is only slightly better then Bet's, I wasn't about to figure out how to download or convert any files!!! Sorry!)

Happy Canada Day!!!!
