Its called a dust bath! Think of it like a human mud pack. Feline version of course doesn't contain excess water. Completion afterwards is best accomplished by seating oneself on a person to groom. If person is not willing then any fabric covered soft couch or chair is an acceptable substitute.

My barn cats take dust baths all of the time, especially the long coated ones---not sure why, but their coats have remained shiny all winter [could be that they're fed like house cats]. Read somewhere that it keeps the critters out of their coats.

That sounds reasonable: zebras do it, horses do it... my indoor cats do it, only there's no nice deep dirt...
