Dog of the Day - Wonder

NorthWapiti's Wonder Woman
DOB - August 1, 2005
Sire - NorthWapiti's Super Grover
Dam - Ch. NorthWapiti's Valkyrie Kara

Wonder is a finisher of the Don Bowers 200.

Wonder is much like her Mom. A very sweet, happy and gorgeous girl. She's spent a good deal of time hanging out around the house and is as delightful to live around as Kara.

Wonder has a whole bunch of sponsors!!!

This Could Have Been Bad....

...but actually it worked out quite well.

I had young Billie in lead today when we came across this...

Turns out the county is knocking down a bunch of trees alongside the road. They had a few pieces of heavy equipment pushing stumps around, slash piles burning and trees being moved.

Spider trotted through the confusion watching everything with interest. Billie made it past the first piece of heavy equipment, but I could tell she wasn't really sure about it all.
When we pulled close to the Cat tractor noisily pushing up stumps, she hit the brakes and ended up balled up back in the team.

I hoped off the ATV and headed up to sort out the tangle planning on swapping her out for one of the more experienced dogs - but the second I stepped off the ATV the workers realized the situation and everything at the site stopped. Way cool!!!

I was able to untangle Billie, give her a bit of reassurance and off we headed with her still in lead thanks to some patient, understanding County of Athabasca workers!

A good, positive experience for a nice young leader!!! Thanks Guys!!!

A Breakthrough

The 2 digital weather stations in our house go 'off scale' at -30. Last Friday afternoon they both got there and have stayed off since.
Temperatures have been around -40 or worse each night and in the -32 to -35 range during the day. Apparently on Sunday the Edmonton International Airport was the second coldest place on the planet reporting in at -46C - only some small town in Siberia was colder.

Yesterday at 3:31 this exciting thing happened -

It was thrilling while it lasted, but by 4:30 we were back to an 'OF'display (I think that is supposed to mean 'off scale' although I do have a few more 'creative' translations).

Thankfully the weather is suppose to break today and temperatures are actually supposed to ROCKET back up to close to freezing within the next couple days.

The weather station display did come back on line about 6:00am and had moved up to -27.8 by 7:30. I may have to take off a layer of polar fleece!!!

I have nothing but good things to say about this dog. Quiet, determined, serious, hard working, handsome ...he is the whole 'Meal Deal'. He embodies everything I look for in a Siberian.

I'm Warm Thanks To....

Many of you may remember our dog jacket fundraiser from last winter and wonder what ever happened to them!
Well, here they are!!!

Kara, not so willingly and not so happily, modeled one of them for me!

They come in red and black (red for the smaller size dogs and black for the bigger guys). I think they turned out fantastic!

You can check for your jacket athttp://picasaweb.google.com/northwapiti2/200912131#

And watch for them on the trails this winter with both NorthWapiti teams, starting with the Copper Basin 300!!

Many thanks to all of you that contributed, Louise at Dogbooties.com and The Amazing Helen!!!

Dog of the Day - Wifi

Carmack's Wifi of NorthWapiti
DOB - August 18, 2006
Sire - NorthWapiti's Robert E. Lee (Squeaky)
Dam - NorthWapiti's See Spot Run

Nickname - Wiffie,Whif,Wi

Finisher of Don Bowers 200.

I've written lots about Wifi before. In size and build he isn't my ideal sleddog and for that reason he was for sale for a number of months, but the right home never came along. Finally, I decided to start training him, mostly to make him easier to sell, but in no time he was off the market and secure in a future here!

Wifi is a crazy boy. Often on our breaks he is spinning in circles and flopping around on his back. 'Stillness' is not something he does well at all.

As long as I'm in a patient mood, he is a good leader. We hope with age and maturity his leadership skills will continue to improve!

The smallest boy in the yard - but definately one of the biggest personalities!

Wifi is sponsored by Barbara and Jerry Lake!
